A Treasured Past

One of the most special items we can provide our children and our grandchildren is knowledge.  Knowledge of our past, knowledge of where we came from, and the moments that shaped our lives.  Given enough time, we would be around to answer their questions, but since our time is not unlimited, and our bodies and minds age, it is critical that we, “Capture our history to preserve our past."

In the past few years, I have tried to get my grandparents to provide me some of their history.  I even purchased a high end Sony digital recorder, sent them a list of prepared questions, as well as a self addressed return envelope for them to return the history safely to me.  I was looking for a glimpse of who they really were, where they came from, and how the events and decisions they made shaped their lives and perhaps mine.

Unfortunately, I'm still waiting for many answers.  They have made an effort to write down some of the questions and answers; but perhaps the digital recorder, time, or other distractions have delayed the completion of this important process.  It is for this reason that I have decided to develop a new approach. 

Through my own frustrating experiences to gather my family history, I have decided to start a new service.  I believe that a face-to-face interview process would work best in capturing people's histories.  It can range from a formal and heavily prepared meeting, to a spontaneous free flowing discussion.  The most important thing is that it is completed in a cohesive and comprehensive way to share with loved ones.
